Macey
May 6, 2009...  Macey had her final series of shots for her heartworm treatment.  She will need to be on crate rest for the next 3-4 weeks.  She was a bit swollen and sore after these final injections, but overall she is doing well.

April 2, 2009...  Macey has started her heartworm treatment and here's an update from her foster mom:
The vet said that Macey seemed to do very well with the injection. The staff loved her. Macey will need to be kept on a very low activity level for the next four weeks to prevent any complications with her treatment while the medicine is ridding her body of the heartworms. She is such a gentle, calm girl by nature so we really think that the next month will be a breeze for her. She was very happy to be home last night, but didn’t understand why I leashed her to go potty in the back yard and didn’t let the other dogs come out with her. Occasionally she and Zeus will chase each other in the yard and we want to take every precaution to be sure that her treatment goes smoothly. She ate her dinner like a champ and enjoyed a pig’s ear for being such a good girl through all of this. Macey wound up the evening by settling in on her bed and snoring loudly all night long. It has been a big two days for her and I’m sure she was exhausted. We’ll keep you posted as Macey progresses with her treatment. As a side note, Macey will not be attending the Bark in the Park event in Columbia on April 18th since she has received her HW treatment and will be under restricted activity at that time. She was really looking forward to meeting everyone but is happy to have received her treatment and be on the way to being completely healthy!

March 11, 2009...  Macey is fantastic! We had a houseguest over the weekend and Macey made great friends within the first 30minutes! She warms up a little quicker to females but loves anyone that will rub her head. She is such a love. No one can resist that sweet demeanor. We took Macey in for her spay and SURPRISE! When they shaved her belly they found a scar indicating that she was already spayed. Great news for Miss Macey since she didn’t have to endure surgery and stitches. While in for the spay, Macey received a fresh pedicure and a microchip. The microchip can be registered to Macey’s forever family information upon adoption. She is heartworm positive and is currently awaiting treatment so that she will be ready for her forever home. Macey does well on the leash, though she is still frightened fairly easily in new environments. The more often she is introduced to new things, the more familiar they become and she is making leaps and bounds. We will continue to work with Macey introducing her to new environments to build her self-confidence. Macey will need a patient family that is willing to help her come out of her shell. For the most part she is a very relaxed dog, content to lay on her bed and check everything out. She does love attention (what boxer doesn’t???) and just eats it up. Very eager to please and treat motivated, “sit” came very easily to her. She also understands “kennel” and she settles in quickly in the crate. She enjoys playing with toys by herself, but when one of the other dogs approaches she quickly drops it for them to take. We believe that she is still learning to play with others and how to understand the playful signs that dogs give. She and Zeus can make beelines chasing each other around the yard and she is FAST! She’s just not very interested in any rough and tumble wrestling. She is a LADY after all...More to come as Macey progresses!  Macey will be at the Bark to the Park event in Columbia on April 18th!!

March 2, 2009...  Macey is a love. HATES the snow. I have to leash her to take her out! lol Learned that after she hid under my bed when I tried to coax her outside. Once out, she plasters herself against the door waiting to be let back in. I can outwait her, though, for the sake of my rugs, and she will eventually run out and do her biz. I bet my neighbors are really enjoying watching me standing out in the middle of the backyard in my rubber boots and pajama pants continually calling while the dog won't come off the porch...
I wish we had a vet estimate on her age.  She's calm and gentle but still playful and I don't see much buildup on her teeth. She has a tiny bit of silver on her muzzle that you really have to look for.

January 14, 2009...  Macey is doing well and coming right along. She is still very apprehensive with new people, but she is definitely gaining confidence. While Macey is handshy if you reach out to her, she will sit for eternity with you and let you rub her face and head when she is comfortable approaching. She is the most shy, lovable girl you will ever meet. Her demeanor is just so humble and unassuming. It almost makes you feel sorry for her in a way because I feel like she is holding back, but we are working on it and everyday we get to see more of her personality coming out. She is very submissive with Zeus (our male boxer) and really does not pay any attention to Sadie (our female poodle). She can be very playful and when she gets excited she will bounce around with her bottom in the air and run like a mad woman around the yard. She seems particularly drawn to our boys, ages 11 and 3 and she is very gentle. I have actually had to put up a baby gate in our bedroom because after a month of sleeping in our bedroom without incident, she had visited our three year old for four nights in a row around 3am-4am to “check” on him. She does very well through the night and besides the early morning visits of late, she quietly snores all night on her bed. She dreams quite a bit and we get so tickled listening to her and watching her little feet move. I sure do hope that they are good dreams. That is actually the only time that we hear this sweet girl make even a muffled “woof”. She will bounce around and make happy whimper noises when we are playing, but she’s just not ready to let out that bark yet. You can tell she really wants to, though! Macey does great in the crate by day. Every morning she runs right in after coming in from her potty break and waits for you to bring her food bowl over. While she does not mind being outside for her potty breaks, we are stepping outside because so far she will not leave the back door if we are not with her. She is always the first one ready to come back in. As she continues to shed the shyness, we will work on some basic obedience skills. She seems to listen and respond very well to a very calm voice. Macey will have a vet visit on Jan 31st to check out a small bump on her ear and get estimates for her HW treatment and spay.

December 15, 2008...  Macey is doing great. Super friendly and on our last potty trip last night she got really playful outside and did some jumping around with her bottom in the air which is encouraging. She was the same this morning and again at lunch when I went home to let them out for a bit. She’s getting very playful as she settles. Still not ready to play with Zeus quite yet, but when he tries to wrestle her she cowers and submits automatically. I keep calling him off to give her a break and to be sure that he’s not being overly dominant with her. She loves to be in the house and always wants to do her business and run right back in.

December 14, 2008... When we picked Macey up she was very shy. Not alot of eye contact and honestly seemed kind of numb. She jumped out of her skin the first several times that I pet her, but I'm sure she's been super stressed coming from the shelter and on her road trips. When we got home I took her into the backyard first and she went straight for the back door ready to go in. She came to me when I called her and followed me around the yard, so I don't necessarily think she is people shy, she was just very nervous at first. Zeus met her with a ton of slobber, overjoyed to have a new playmate. She's not quite ready to play yet but tolerated his jumping around and baiting her very well. He must've dropped one of every type of toy we own in front of her. Hahaha. She hasn't really paid much attention to him or to Sadie (our small poodle). She is sweet and very gentle with both of our boys ages 3yrs & 11yrs and lets them pet her. She's been great in the house so far and seems to know her way around. The laminate floors haven't bothered her at all and she didn't seem worried about any of the household stuff, she just follows one of us around until someone sits down and then she settles herself down nearby. She's asleep at my feet right now. I crated her so that I could run out to pick up Tyler and she did fine. She didn't want to go in so I baited her with a piece of rotisserie chicken and she settled right in. She hasn't made a peep yet.  More to come as we get to know her!!
