KALI
March 26, 2009...  Kali continues to do very well!  She can be very playful at times - she loves to play tug of war with her rope and keep away with her stuffed jack.  She still completely tips over the toy basket looking for something new!!  She also loves "boxing" with her foster fur brother, Brady, and playing with Teddy the cat!  She and my female boxer don't play much but they get along great!  Now that the weather is getting nice Kali begs to go outside and "sunbathe" on the deck!  She could hang out there for an hour or two just enjoying the day (as you can see from the picture above!)!  When Kali is done playing she'll have a good nap!  She's a great napping buddy - although she can snore pretty loudly at times :)  I really love Kali Bear - she has been one of my favorite fosters!

We are currently trying to raise the funds to have Kali's heartworms treated.  This is the final step in her recovery process!

March 1, 2009...  Kali has been doing great since her surgery.  She has been eating well and has started playing with all of the other dogs again - especially Fitz, the puppy!!  We got the path report back from the vet and found out that the mass that was removed was a Grade II mast cell tumor.  So, we are happy to see that gone!!  Thanks to everyone who donated to Kali's surgery!!

February 15, 2009...  Kali had her surgery on February 10th (mass removal and spay).  It took her several days to recover.  She was very groggy and wouldn't eat until Friday.  But now she is back to her old self (minus a big mass)!!  We go back on February 22nd to have the sutures removed.  We should have the pathology results then as well.  Hopefully this mass will be benign and all that will be left to do is treat her heartworms!!  Thanks to everyone who has donated to her care!!

February 9, 2009...  Kali is having surgery tomorrow.  She is being spayed and having her mass removed.  Please keep her in your thoughts.  We'll let everyone know how she is doing tomorrow night!!

January 1, 2009....  Kali had a blast over the holidays!  She got to fill the role of "mom" for boxer puppy Greta who was recently adopted and she spent some time with her foster grandparents!!  She is such a happy, sweet dog!  It does take Kali a little time to warm up to new dogs (a result of not being properly socialized when she was younger) but if you look at the new pics below you'll see that she does make friends with other dogs and really enjoys the company of other dogs!  She LOVED Greta and her "boyfriend" is my boxer, Brady!!!  Kali is crate and house trained.  She is currently wearing a diaper (as you will see in the pic with Brady, who is neutered) because she has gone into heat :( .   Thank you to everyone who has donated to Kali's care.  We are working on getting some estimates from local vets for mass removal, spay and heartworm treatment.

December 11, 2008...  Kali has been in rescue now for 5 months.  She is such a great girl and we would love to get her ready for her forever home, but we need help.  Kali has a mass under her left front leg that needs to be removed.  She also needs to be spayed and treated for heartworms.  We have to raise about $1000 to get all of her medical issues taken care of before she is ready to be adopted.  Please consider helping Kali.

November 22, 2008...  Kali is doing very well!  We have been leaving her out of the crate with the others dogs more and more while we are at work and she is doing great!!  It's been fun to see her doing the boxer wiggle with the others when we get home!  She is so happy and loves to play! She still tips the toy basket over to check out ALL of the toys!!  I think she keeps hoping something new will appear!  Her favorites are the Kong Wubba and the stuffed jack!  She runs all through the house with them just as happy as can be!  We are having a great time with her!

October 19, 2008...  Kali continues to do great in her foster home.  She LOVES to play with her foster brother (male boxer) and gets along well with the female boxer in the house.  She also continues to play well with the cat.  Kali is such an easy going, wonderful dog.  She has such a great personality and makes me laugh all of the time!  She is doing great on housetraining and is fully crate trained.  As soon as we are sure she is 100% housetrained, we will try leaving her out of the crate while we are gone.  I think she'll do great!  At night, Kali sleeps on her dog bed, right beside my bed.  Kali snores very loud at times - which I think is awfully cute and just adds to her goofy personality!

Kali still needs to be treated for heartworms, spayed and have a mass under her front leg removed.  She is a great dog and would be a wonderful addition to any family!

September 3, 2008...  Kali has been with us for several weeks now and we just love her.  It took her several days to get used to our dogs (a male and female boxer), but now they all get along great!  Kali even enjoys hanging out with our cat.  Kali is very laid back for a boxer.  Every now and then she'll get a big burst of energy, but she is happy just lounging around and being petted.  She didn't know what to do with toys when she first came here, but she has watched my crazy boxers having a blast with them and has finally figured it out.  Today she emptied the "toy basket" and played with each soft/stuffed toy in there.  They are her favorite! She kept prancing through the kitchen with the lady bug in her mouth while I was making dinner!  She loved when my male boxer would try to get it from her - she just kept doing laps through the house until he finally caught up!

Kali loves going for walks.  She will pull a little on the leash when she sees people or other dogs, but overall it's really enjoyable to walk her.  I think she would do great with a harness, but I have held off on that since she has a tumor under her front leg.  Once this is removed, we can give it a try.  She does really well when the neighborhood kids come up to pet her while on our walks.  The kids next door nick named her "Special K".  And they're right... she is a really special dog!

Kali has learned "sit" and "no".  We are working on "off" and "stay".  Cheese has been her big motivator!!  She is fully crate trained.  She does not tear anything up while in her crate.  She is very comfortable there - it's her safe place and she will often just lay down in there if I am in the kitchen.  She has had some accidents in the house.  We are working on this and she does very well when I take her out every 2 hours while I am home.  She never goes to the bathroom in her crate.  She has had some diarrhea and I think this is what has led to the accidents in the house.  Hopefully she'll be feeling better soon and we can get her fully housetrained!

We have really enjoyed having Kali with us!  She is a great dog - very loving and laid back.  She's easy - that's really the best way to describe her.  She doesn't need much except a rub on the head or belly every now and then!

July 15, 2008... Kali is approximately 4 years old and was brought into the local animal shelter as a stray. Kali is a sweet girl that craves attention. Her favorite thing is to have her head rubbed and if I stop too soon she'll nudge my hand with her nose!  She also loves for me to sit on the floor with her and just hold her.  I think she would just sit in my lap all day if I let her. Kali is a medium sized boxer. She is currently 49 lbs and could stand to put on ~10 more lbs. Kali is still figuring out how to play with toys. If I throw one out in the yard she will run to it but still has yet to pick one up! I'm sure she'll get the hang of it soon!  She met the kids next door (12 and 13) and loved them. Her little nub just wouldn't stop wiggling! Kali is crate trained - she goes right in with a treat. And, she seems to be house trained.

Kali is heartworm positive, so she will need to be treated for this and will need to be spayed. She also has a growth under her left armpit that will need to be removed. The vet thinks that it is benign. It feels like breast tissue - probably due to having several litters at some point.
