August 29, 2009... Midget is the latest addition to our family. Midge is pretty small in stature, but she is a bundle of energy. She weighs 39 pounds and it is all Boxer. She has all the traits; wiggle, kidney bean curl, lots of kisses, and the famous boxing footwork. She went to the vet today and was the hit of the place. She is in OK health except that she is a little thin, and she tested positive for heartworms. She does not appear to have any training. She does not know any commands (at least in English), but she seems to be a fast learner. She is already responding to her name, and she has only been with us for 6 days. We are patiently working on the other basic commands such as sit, stay, down, no etc. She so far has not gone into the crate on her own, but will go right in if you bribe her with a treat. Once in the crate, she settles down nicely, if someone is in the room with her. We experimented with leaving her in the crate while we were in the other room, and she abruptly let us know that this was unacceptable. She definitely loves being with humans. We have started to allow her access to the rest of the house as well. She has not had any accidents so far, so she might indeed have been house broken. We make sure to let her outside at regular intervals and she has almost always immediately done her business when she hits the back yard. She also seems to get along with other dogs as well. She and our male Boxer, Buck, have been living it up playing in the back yard and racing about. When confronted with various sizes and breeds of dogs at the vet, she was very friendly and showed no signs of aggression. We have also started feeding Midget and Buck together. No signs of food aggression either. Well, she is definitely a great dog and will make someone an outstanding companion. As soon as we lick this whole heartworm thing, she will be ready to rock & roll.
