September 14, 2009... Duke came to live with us earlier this month. We love having him here. He is a very loveable and loyal sweetie. He loves playing with Murphy. Murphy is very much an alpha female, she and Duke get along great together. He has shown no signs of aggression toward my dog or the cats. He pretty much ignores the cats. occasionally he will sniff at them but has never chased them.
He loves chewing on tennis balls. He also plays with one the size of a basketball. He prefers chewing them to chasing them. He is eating well and sleeps on the doggy bed when he is not sneaking up to sleep in the bed with me. He does not like to have his nails clipped. It is a challenge to clip them. We kind of made it into a game. We may only clip one or two at a time but we eventually get them all clipped. He needs some work with walking on a leash. He gets excited and wants to pull a bit, but we are working on that. He is anxious to interview humans who he may be interested in adopting. If you are interested in being adopted by Duke, please contact CBR!
August 29, 2009... Duke is back in rescue through no fault of his own. Duke is male dog aggressive and his previous adopters allowed Duke to be in a situation where he was able to start a fight with another male boxer. Duke needs a family who is responsible enough to keep him away from other male dogs. Duke loves people, including kids, female dogs and kittie cats. He is a very gentle, lovable boy. He is house trained and can be trusted loose in the house. All of the volunteers who have met Duke have fallen in love with him. He is a really great boy who needs a family who can really look out for his needs.
June 12, 2009... Well, what can I say?!?! Duke is lounging (sleeping) beside me snoring loud as ever :) Just a TINY slit in his neck now...meds are finished.and he is in MUCH, MUCH better shape. YEAH!! He sleeps with us every night...across the entire bed of course...we just sleep around him....lol!! He has not needed to be in a crate AT ALL since coming home with me. He is house-broken. Word of advice though...DO NOT LEAVE FOOD AT THE EDGE OF THE COUNTER....lets just say he has had 2 really grat meals n the past week! (Filet mignon and a turkey!) Only took TWICE, but I have learned my lesson.... He is such a big guy that he doesn't need to jump on the counter to get food - his head is just about level with the counter and one good lick will get anything off of the edge!!!
May 27, 2009... Wanted to let everyone know Duke is doing good....he walks well on a leash (although having a collar on him with that wound in his neck still creeps me out)....he is taking his antibiotics and meds for yeast in his ears...as we speak, he is lounged across the bed with my soon to be 3-year old....both PASSED out together!! He is so laid back, sweet!
May 26, 2009... Duke has moved to his permanent foster home and is being a good boy. He is getting along with everyone including the kitten!! He went back to the vet for a recheck of his wounds. He was placed on another antibiotic. He was also given some medicine for his ears and for hookworms. The vet was also able to take some time to really look at his teeth to determine his age. His previous owners thought he was 10 years old - but they had found Duke and never knew for sure. Well.... they were wrong!! Duke is only about 5 years old!!! Duke has a very laid back personality - he is just so happy and easy! Duke's previous family had 2 young children ages 1 and 4. We were told that he was wonderful with them.
May 19, 2009... Duke is being a good boy in his temporary foster home. He gets along well with the female boxer here and with the cat!! He had the drain removed from his wound last Friday, but we do still have to flush his wounds twice a day. He isn't crazy about having this done but he puts up with it! He seemed to finally be feeling better today. He found some toys out in the yard and went running all around with them. He destroyed 2 before he was done playing! We have discovered that he knows "sit, stay and shake hands". Duke is a big love bug. He will always kiss you back when you hug or kiss him. And, he follows me around like a shadow.
May 12, 2009... Duke is a sweet boy weighing in at 80 lbs!! He was surrendered to CBR yesterday after the other male dog in the home attacked him. Duke's owners were very worried about keeping the 2 dogs (both males, not neutered) together and could not afford the surgery needed to repair Duke's wounds. He was sedated last night as the vet sutured his wounds and placed a drain. Duke stayed overnight to have his wounds cared for by the vets. Duke is now ready to go to a foster home but we have no foster homes available at this time. Duke also lived with a female dog and a puppy in his previous home and enjoyed playing with both. The only dog he ever had any trouble with was the other male dog in the home - this was probably the result of neither dog being neutered. Duke's temperament at the vet's office has been wonderful. He tries to do a kidney bean when anyone new comes along.... just hoping for a head rub. He was great with the staff as they poked around at his wounds. He's just a big old lazy boxer boy!! His previous owner said that he is house trained and can be trusted in the house, but also does fine in a crate.
Duke has been surrendered to CBR, but is not in a foster home just yet - he is still being treated at the vet's office. Duke needs a foster home!! CBR has no open male foster homes right now. If you can help please contact CBR.
